I have never had a hardware problem.

If you have enough memory and enough disc space in almost any situation plug and play is going to take over.

The rest is software.

Freezes, soft crashes, hard Crashes, lost data degridated data, glitches and jerks.

The software is the crucial ingredient, I keep forgeting that my machine is ancient(over 3 years old) but works.

I was at a workshop in December for learning to edit with FCP3. It was pretty cool. I was the only one under 30 though, which was kinda wierd. Anyways, there were a few professionals there. One lady did HDTV stuff, and had edited on AVID, I think, for 8 years or so. Another guy had worked on Premier pretty much exclusively. A third was an amateur guy, but he works for IBM and he just bought a Mac tripped out with FCP3 and a bunch of DV gadgets. All three of these people, despite backgrounds in different soft and hardware thought FCP3 on the Mac vastly superior to what they were using in the past. I'd say actual professional insight should say something here.

There are some points about the PC though. If you're the type, like my friend, who is addicted to computer gaming...I wouldn't say the Mac's for you, unless you like games like Myth or Deer Hunter. There are also media sharing issues. No one makes a program with a PC/Mac interface since Napster, except for Limewire (but it's not fantastic) so if you're big into the MP3 or MPG sharing found on Kazaa or Morpheus, Mac's not for you.

As a final defence to Mac, I have friends that are well versed in PC's and even they complain about how much they crash, maybe they're dumb, but...yeah. And if you get this degree, what are you going to do afterwards? Like machead said, his Mac is 3 years old and still works like new. Will the built in obselesence I find in PC's get you in the pocket book when you continually have to upgrade and expand (which Xendar pointed out is so easy for PC's to do...maybe for this reason?)

I have a story about stupid people like Xendar's "return key". Guy calls the help line at a Mac computer dealer the following conversation occurs:

"The the scanner or software you sold me is faulty"

"Okay sir, what seems to be the problem?"

"It scans upside down"

You see, he put his picture in the wrong way, because that's how his previous scanner had done things, and expected the software to turn the image around...

"Okay sir, this is what you do..."

"Yes?"

"Rotate your picture 180 degrees in you scanner"

Anyways that's my two cents...or pence for our UK friends.

I used FCP at the New York Film Academy and used Premiere for my Film degree, and, if i'm honest i found FCP far better. You just get the feeling with FCP that its not gonna let you down, where as when using Premiere i save after every edit or rendering. In saying that, i'm gonna make a massive investment in a new systems and i'm buying a P.C. And why? Basically I've got so used to Windows, and the shear avaiablity of "free" software on the net that it seemed silly trying to learn a new system. When I was at the academy, one of our lecturers was the editor on loads of Bond films and other big studio stuff and he rekons Avid is by far and away the best of all the editing packages. I've never used Avid myself, but this guy has like edited some 57 studio movies inc. the classic "Jason and the Arganauts" so i but alot of stock [img]wink.gif[/img] in his opinion.

Comfortable is only answer to you, Chris. You are only one who should be feeling comfortable with,... Write con and pro about PC and Mac. Write down "what is major thing you will use most and figure which one. I got a PC and it is for server purpose. Mac for my movie production. They are just a toy even for my porsche!
